If you like trains then a visit to Bardstown to see the Kentucky State Railway Museum is a must, it is one of the oldest rail museums in the United States and High Bridge located near Nicholasville is the highest railroad bridge over navigable water in the US. Located in historic Covington you’ll find The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption has 82 stained-glass windows including the world's largest hand-blown glass and the huge window depicts the Council of Ephesus with 134 life-sized figures. Enjoy a trip with a difference: Middlesboro is the only city in the United States built within a meteor crater and Cumberland Falls known as the ‘Niagara of the South’ and one of the few places in the world where one can see a ‘moonbow’ on a regular basis, it is located just southwest of Corbin and one of the most popular areas is Cumberland Gap National Park, with its breathtaking views of the Appalachian Mountains. Canoeing and rafting trips are very popular in this area. The Lost River Cave and Valley Bowling Green includes a cave with the shortest and deepest underground river in the world. It contains the largest cave opening east of the Mississippi. <br><br>If you are looking for amazing scenery within the beautiful lakes region, then visit Hopkinsville, Marion, Paducah, Owensboro, or not far away is Morgantown, Smiths Grove, Cave City and Glasgow providing the ideal spot to enjoy the cave country. Mammoth Cave National Park is the main gateway to this spectacular region and Mammoth Cave has the largest known network of natural caves and underground passageways in the world where you can view its subterranean wonders and beauty. Explore the maze of passages, cavernous domes and pits, underground rivers and spectacular lakes, unusual animals, plants and rugged topography. Above ground the scenic parkland is perfect for hiking, fishing, paddling, and wildlife viewing, including a 300-acre forest that supports rare and endangered species. Some of Kentucky’s most magnificent lakes can be found in the region, the Green River southeast of Morgantown and Barren are big navigable rivers. Between the mouth of Drakes Creek and Jennings Creek the Barren River is scenic and ideal for paddling. Along its banks are tree roots exposed by lateral erosion where the river is more winding and suitable for canoeing.
