With the splendour of its topography it is uniquely captivating. Pheasant, grouse, quail, and deer thrive amongst the subtle beauty of the area. Nearby Seneca is the rare feature of the nation's largest hand-planted forest in the Nebraska National Forest with nearly 20,000 acres of ponderosa pines, eastern red cedars and jack pines. It is the largest most impressive hand-planted forest in the country.<br><br>Further southeast you can experience one of nature's most amazing spectacles, the annual crane migration. For millions of years more than 500,000 sandhill cranes have descended upon the region of the Platte River Valley. Also in the Platte River Valley, you'll discover the first transcontinental railroad and Buffalo Bill's Scout's Rest Ranch near North Platte in the Prairie Lakes Country. You can tour his elaborate Victorian home and the big red barn filled with memorabilia at the Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park and Recreation Area. Other towns offering a wide range of attractions are Curtis and Imperial. Visit the famous station of the Pony Express in and near Gothenburg. The building was used as a stop over for the famous Pony Express Riders of 1860-1861. The riders lost no time and would gallop in, pick up a fresh horse and rush back to the road in all weathers night or day to deliver the "express" mail to its ultimate destination in record time. There is a small log cabin with a toy chest full of old Pony Express paraphernalia. Whatever your interests you'll find a wealth of exciting outdoor pursuits to suit all the family. <br><br>Expansive sandhills, pine-covered buttes with rolling hills and lush river valleys can be discovered in the Panhandle region. If variety is what you're after, then don't miss the spectacular Chimney Rock estimated at being 325 feet high from tip to base and 120 feet for the spire situated near Big Springs and Scotsbluff and designated a National Historic Site. This landmark has been admired upon by people for centuries and is known as the most famous landmark on the Oregon-California Trail. From Crazy Horse to the cavalry to the K-9 Corps, Fort Robinson near the town of Harrison, played host to them all. Experience the long and varied history of this outpost on the Plains. The museum exhibits trace the history from the post's role guarding the Red Cloud Agency (1874-77) through the housing of World War II German POW's (1943-46) and nineteenth-century Sioux objects related to the Red Cloud Agency. Stop at Sidney for the world-famous outdoor outfitter Cabela's. This remarkable retail store caters for hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreational enthusiasts, it also functions as a wildlife museum, or take the Gold Rush Byway, part of one of the most scenic and historic pathways in the nation and offers the historic buff a healthy dose of frontier history in some of the most scenic wilderness around.
