Known for its lively artistic community it boasts a marvellous Performing Arts Center, movie complex, arts and crafts galleries exhibiting local artists paintings, pottery, sculptures and a historical museum. It’s a nature’s paradise and with the Bainbridge Gardens it provides a historic seven-acre nursery featuring unusual trees and shrubs, bonsai and many other garden-oriented items. The outdoors attractions are endless offering hiking, biking, equestrian trails, golf and tennis. Be sure to visit the concerts on Wednesday evenings in Waterfront Park. Bainbridge Island has a rich heritage, ethnic history dating back centuries where you’ll find antiques, vintage furniture, collectibles and so much more. Shopping in the town is a must with the many unique stores, as are the restaurants where you’ll enjoy anything from fine cuisine, al fresco to fresh takeaways. Visit the Vineyard and Winery, enjoy a picnic, play on the beaches or trek through the beautiful forest and parks. From Bainbridge Island and Vashon you can cross the Agate Pass Bridge to the rest of the Kitsap Peninsula, up to Freeland and Clinton. And enjoy not only stunning scenery but some trendy cafes and restaurants too.<br><br>On the Southern end of the island lies the beautiful historic village of Langley known as the “artists colony” of Puget Sound. Here you’ll find period buildings in pretty flower-filled streets and hanging baskets, and the arts galleries are exceptional, dine in the quaint restaurants set in picturesque settings and you’ll see why it’s home to many artists with the stunning landscape it has to offer. You can hike the 2.7-mile Cascade Lake Loop that runs along the lakeshore where you’ll view Great blue herons, kingfishers, pileated woodpeckers, rabbits and black-tailed deer. <br><br>Anacortes along with Greenbank and Lummi Island can all be found on Fidalgo Island where you can drive over the spectacular bridges and it is home of the Washington State Ferry terminal. The bustling port city of Anacortes offers the visitor wonderful parks, great galleries and excellent antique shopping with a myriad of recreational activities for all ages with four full-service marinas and three public boat launches. Whether your vacation is for ordinary sailing or power boating, whale watching, hiking, kayaking, mountain biking, golf, camping, sport fishing, bird watching, scuba diving or beach combing, you’ll find excellent opportunities abound. The parks provide hiking trails for all levels and Washington Park a 220-acre gem is the largest and most popular. Don’t miss Deception Pass Bridge for some stunning vistas and beautiful unique stretches of beach. Mount Erie Park, rising 1,300 feet above Anacortes, provides some spectacular views of the Skagit Valley and a real chance to view the scenic neighboring islands that are surrounded by pristine public forestland. For the music and arts buff there are several annual activities like the Waterfront Festival in May and the Anacortes Arts Festival every August, they always go down a treat and generates good rave reviews. <br><br>The cute little historic town of Coupeville is the second oldest town in the state and built along the waters edge has some beautiful saltwater beaches to enjoy, it also proudly boasts many original buildings dating from the 19th century. The largest city on the island is Oak Harbor, with a large naval air station where you may see carrier aircrafts taking off and landing. Check out Penn Cove and see where the best mussels are harvested which are considered to be among the finest seafood delicacies and you can taste them in the many restaurants.<br><br>Lopez Island a 15-miles long and 8 miles wide, has been dubbed “The Friendly Isle”. Life on Lopez is relaxed and where you can enjoy boating, kayaking, fishing, whale watching, hiking and it is a cyclists paradise as well as a beach combers dreamland with its scenic beauty, try the Fisherman Bay Road to the Shark Reef Recreation Area, located on the southwest side of the island, you’ll find a marine and bird sanctuary that overlooks the San Juan Channel or opt for the Nature Walk on Fisherman's Bay. The landscape is picturesque and as you cycle along the twist and turns of the little country lanes stretching for miles through forests with nearly 30 square miles of woods of old cedar and fir groves and pastoral farmlands offering outstanding vistas, it also has the oldest vineyard, producing organically grown grapes and offers fine wines. You’ll also find several art galleries, a Historical Museum, shops and restaurants. To enjoy the area at a slower pace, then perhaps stroll along the public sandy beaches on San Juan Channel and watch as the boats of all types go back and forth, or hike the trails of the State and County Parks.
