Golf is available to all who wish to play, not just for the challenging terrain and spectacular mountain vistas, but also for the spectacle of the settings! <br><br>A visit to the New River Greenbrier Valley region, in the heart of Colonial America, amidst the beautiful forests and the scenic Allegheny Mountains that are rich with natural resources offer the visitor prefect outdoor opportunities for exploring the mountains with miles and miles of trails leading hikers, bikers and horseback riders beside sparkling streams, flowing rivers and springs. Anglers and hunters will be spoilt for choice with the vast amount of fish and game in the wildlife management areas. See the many overlooks as you pass quaint villages like Lewisburg, set in a beautifully preserved 18th- and 19-century era where a major Civil War battlefield took place. Visit the art, antiques and taste the adventurous cuisine, perhaps you may want to explore some of the 100 caverns, just a few miles south is Scott Hollow or further up north you'll find the Lost World Caverns, a registered natural landmark with its spectacular sculpture and some of the largest stalactites seen, or stop by Fayetteville and admire the New River Gorge Bridge, the world's longest steel-span bridge rising 876 feet above the river. With nearly 2,000 miles of streams surging down the mountains, try some of the most challenging white-water in the East, for more adventure experience river rafting down the New Virginia River, a perfect way to see the picturesque countryside while daring rock climbers scale the walls of the ancient New River Gorge. <br><br>Don't miss the healing spas at White Sulphur Springs, the world-famous and unique golf courses where they have retained the oldest organized golf club in the US, as the sheep cut the grass the golfers play with charming old-style equipment from Scotland and England that is still used today. On to Beckley, the heart of West Virginia's ‘smokeless' coal industry, also a spacious arts center with more than 1,200 artisans, handcrafts, live entertainment and when the snow falls, head southeast of Beckley where you can ski until 10 pm every day. The country roads lead you to some charming bed and breakfast in West Virginia State where you'll find excellent hospitality in ideal locations for exploring the great outdoors!<br><br>The Potomac Highlands, offer an abundance of outdoor activities including fishing where the fish hatcheries keep local streams stocked with bass, trout and other game fish, so is hunting in the region's forests and at the Warden Lake Wildlife Management area. Winter playgrounds are available too, the deep, fresh snow extends the ski season right through to mid-April. Snowshoe a pretty village providing restaurants, shops, pubs and nightlife is one of the major all-season destinations and the Monongahela National Forest opens up to Nordic skiers. It's a winter wonderland where you can enjoy beautiful scenery, excellent slopes and trails catering for downhill skiers, snowboarding, skiboard, high-speed tubing, sleigh rides and lots of free skiing fun. Other marvellous skiing facilities within the area are in Canaan Valley Resort State Park which has 34 interconnecting slopes and not far is the Timberline Four Seasons Resort which provides the Salamander Run, the longest ski trail south of New England with an awe-inspiring view of Dolly Sods Wilderness Area. You can either bike the scenic countryside on the many trails or hike through the pine and cedar woods along awesome picturesque ridges, go hunting, fishing in the streams or take a ride on the scenic railway for exciting excursions. <br><br>For viewing some of the best natural beauty, families with children can cycle along the quiet back roads and pass through splendid scenic country on the way. Marlinton, presents itself as an outdoor adventure destination and is ideally situated for exploring the highlands. Nearby is the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, one of four centers in the world where interstellar impulses are monitored on gigantic radio telescopes. Here you can learn about galaxies, black holes and pulsars during free daily tours.<br>Check out the bustling little town of Davis with its live theater and concert performances, poetry readings and jazz music. You'll also find antiques, fine arts and crafts. The college town of Elkins, situated near the mountains is home to a sophisticated community of musicians, performers, artists, writers and crafters. Try the fairways, the rugged natural settings of the championship golf courses or participate on the greens at Canaan Valley Resort State Park. You'll find many courses dotting the countryside for all to enjoy.<br><br>A region steeped in Colonial and Civil War history, near the Potomac River in the Eastern Gateway region is Berkeley Springs, a town of healing waters and spa treatments and in the center of town you'll find the Tiny Berkeley Springs State Park a location for therapeutic massage and warm mineral baths, browse its shops, fine arts stores, antiques and collectibles that can be found in the tree-lined streets. The George Washington Heritage Trail Byway is worth the hike, the scenic loop has convenient access points at Berkeley Springs, Charles Town and Shepherdstown with panoramic views and unspoiled countryside. Don't forget Cacapon Resort State Park, one of West Virginia's most popular parks. Stop off at the pretty town of nearby Shepherdstown overlooking the Potomac River which is one of West Virginia's oldest towns, providing charming restaurants and has a wonderful college-town style feel about it. For history lovers, Shepherdstown became a vast hospital during the Civil War due to the nearby Battle of Antietam and was the jumping-off point for the legendary Bee Line march to reinforce George Washington's fledgling Continental Army. Sparkling water is the scene set for the majestic Mountain Lakes area, a beautiful and tranquil mountain region with fresh air and forests, 5 lakes, streams, several rivers and rich in Civil War history. Here you can indulge in boating, white-water rafting, fishing, hunting and there is a variety of other activities to enjoy. Not far from Weston, you'll find the remarkable Stonewall Jackson Lake a natural destination for water sports such as scuba diving, water skiing, windsurfing and more. Charming towns as ideal bases from which to explore are: Buckhannon, Summersville, Weston, Clay, and Glen Ferris. <br><br>Outdoor adventure can be found in Mid-Ohio Valley, a historic place offering the visitor excellent attractions. Parkersburg, set on the Ohio River, boasts beautiful Victorian mansions and the museum exhibits the oil and gas boom of the late 19th century.
