FRENCH TOAST Ingredients One egg per two people ½ cup milk per two people 3 tablespoons whiskey dash of vanilla (more to taste) dash of nutmeg 2 to 3 tablespoons of cinnamon/sugar mixture portuguese sweet bread sliced (3/4 " to 1" thick) (2 half slices per person) canned light whipped cream fresh fruit for garnish powdered sugar in shaker pam or spray oil (optional- butter) maple or pancake syrup
Preparation: Slice bread and set aside. Beat eggs. Add milk, whiskey, vanilla, nutmeg, and cinnamon/sugar mixture and beat again until well mixed. Heat griddle to 400 degrees and spray with pam. Be sure that the grease is even across the surface. (butter may be used if desired). Dip bread into mixture very quickly on both sides. The bread will absorb very quickly, so don't soak it. Place on hot griddle. Keep an eye on the temperature. If bread gets brown too fast, lower the temperature a bit. Remember it needs time to cook throughout. When side one is browned to your taste, turn the bread over. When that side is brown, stand bread on the flat cut end with your spatula to cook more. It is finished when it no longer sizzles when standing on end.
Remove from griddle and place 2 slices on a warmed dish. Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Spray a rosette of whipped cream on one side and garnish with berries or fresh fruit. Serve with sausage or bacon and warm syrup. |
